TACAN Beacon Simulators were quite big in 1955, like this one from Hoffman. The cabinet is about 5 feet tall ( 1.7m).
The simulator replaces the antenna of the airborne set under test, and can transmit and receive on all 126 “X” channels. Any bearing can be set, even a slowly changing bearing. Any range can be simulated as well, including a changing range at up to 4000 knots. The reply efficiency can be varied from 0 to 100%.

A similar testset was made by Stromberg-Carlson, the AN/ARM-22
